‘Generous Jack’ what a quirky game! It’s ‘win what you see’ premise certainly made it a fresh illustration challenge after working on standard layout slots. The unconventional mechanics certainly made the non-linear UI a difficult nut to crack! Check out the video below for a gameplay demo.
The retro showbiz theme was also a great opportunity to take a stab at a classic animation style, which I’d been itching to try for years. The original intention was to combine flat, cel shaded symbols with backgrounds and static elements that emulated traditionally painted animation art of the 1920’s to 1950’s. I relished painting the casino objects, full of Push Gaming Easter eggs, but ultimately the visuals were simplified, cutting some of the embellishments and going for a more familiar style for the cel shaded elements.
Would have loved to have gone hand drawn frame by frame for the character animation and FX but, as we had a very small art crew (myself as principal artist, plus one animator), we had to be as efficient as possible with our techniques.
It underwent some minor visual tweaks in the few months between my departure from Push and release, going on to earn a respectable 8 out of 10 from Big Win Board, who described the visuals as ‘restrained yet classy’.
